Superannuation arrangements

NTGPASS is closed to employees who commence service with the Northern Territory Government after 9 August 1999. Employees who commence after that date are in choice of fund superannuation arrangements which means they can choose the superannuation fund into which the Northern Territory Government will contribute superannuation guarantee (currently at 11% ordinary time earnings). The superannuation guarantee rate will increase by 0.5% per year until it reaches 12% from 1 July 2025.

New employees should complete a superannuation fund choice form to advise their payroll section the name of their preferred superannuation fund.

Default superannuation fund for NT public sector – Hostplus

New employees who do not return the Superannuation Fund Choice form to their payroll area will have their superannuation guarantee contributions paid:

  • if they already have an account with a superannuation fund, into that account (known as a 'stapled account')
  • if they don’t have a stapled account, into the Northern Territory Government’s default superannuation fund.

The default external superannuation service provider for Northern Territory Government employees is Hostplus. This scheme is not administered by the Northern Territory Superannuation Office.

1 The amount of ordinary time earnings that are eligible for superannuation is capped to a quarterly amount known as the maximum contribution base. For 2023-24, the maximum contribution base is $62,270 per quarter ($249,080 per year). This amount increases each year from 1 July based on movements in the average weekly ordinary time earnings.
