Population projections – 2024 release

The Department of Treasury and Finance have developed projections for the whole of the Territory’s resident population out to the year 2051 and the Territory’s regional populations out to the year 2041, disaggregated by age, sex and Aboriginal identity. The projections are based on Australian Bureau of Statistics 2021 Census final estimated resident population numbers at 30 June 2021.

The projections have been developed in collaboration with the Demography and Growth Planning team at the Northern Institute of Charles Darwin University.

The projections are developed based on ABS Australian Statistical Geography Standard. Projections have also been developed based on Northern Territory Government’s defined regional areas (see output file below).
