Gas market reform
The Northern Territory Government is reforming the governance, administration and operation of its gas business, currently managed by the Power and Water Corporation. The reforms will mean the NT Government’s role in the gas market:
- supports greater competition in the NT gas market
- reflects contemporary Australian gas market arrangements and compliance with National Gas Law regarding competition and other regulatory provisions
- is fit-for-purpose and appropriate to deal with the increasing commercial and operational activity in the Beetaloo Sub-basin following gas production commencing in late 2026
- is focused on safeguarding NT energy security for power generation
- improves access to gas transportation services within the NT gas pipeline network and facilitates gas transportation to the east coast.
The Department of Treasury and Finance is working with the Power and Water Corporation, Territory Generation and other key stakeholders to implement the reforms.
Future arrangements will see Territory Generation taking on an expanded role in securing the gas required to power the NT, including responsibility for key gas supply agreements currently held by the Power and Water Corporation.
This website will be updated as the reforms progress.
